What’s included

What a deck project
includes.

A deck is several decisions made together: the boards, the frame under them, the way down to the lawn and what holds the edge.

  1. Wood decks

Cedar or pressure-treated lumber, stained in the tone you choose or left to weather.

    • Cedar or pressure-treated boards
    • Single and multi-level layouts
    • Stain and sealer
    • Wide steps down to grade
  2. Composite decks

Composite boards on a wood frame, for a surface that asks for washing and little else.

    • Composite decking
    • Cedar posts and rail caps
    • Aluminium balusters
    • Raised decks with stairs
  3. Stairs, railings and lighting

The parts you touch every day, chosen with the deck and built with it.

    • Cedar, aluminium or glass railings
    • Stairs and landings
    • Lights set into the risers
    • Decks around an above-ground pool
  4. Design and rendering

A measured layout and a rendering of the deck before any lumber is ordered.

    • Site measure and levels
    • Layout and material choices
    • A rendering to review
  5. Repair and renovation

New life for a deck whose structure is still sound, and honest advice when it is not.

    • Frame and joist repairs
    • New boards on an existing frame
    • Railing replacement
    • Deck waterproofing

  3. Design before construction

We discuss the work and your budget at the start, then keep you informed as the project moves through each stage.

Good to know

Planning a deck:
what shapes the job.

Three things decide most of a deck: what it is made of, how high it stands and what your municipality asks for.

Boards and frame

The frame does the structural work and is almost always pressure-treated lumber, whatever goes on top. The choice you see and walk on is the decking: cedar for warmth and the option to stain, composite for colour that holds without re-coating.

Railings follow the same split. Stained cedar posts and caps can carry cedar spindles, slim aluminium balusters or glass, and a deck often mixes materials so the wood is where your hand rests.

Height and the way down

A deck a step above the lawn and a deck off a raised main floor are different structures. Height sets the size of the posts and footings, whether guards are needed and how much stair it takes to reach the grass.

On a yard that falls away from the house, two levels joined by wide steps often work better than one tall platform: the upper level stays by the door and the lower one meets the garden.

Permits and setbacks

Whether a deck needs a building permit is the municipality’s call, and the answer changes with height, a roof and how the deck relates to the house’s exits. Setbacks from the lot lines come from the zoning by-law and apply even to a deck that is exempt from a permit.
