What’s included

What a pergola project
includes.

A pergola is posts, beams and an open roof of rafters. It gives a patio or deck a ceiling without closing it in, and its proportions matter more than its size.

  1. Design

Sized and placed for the space under it, and drawn before it is built.

    • Post layout and height
    • Attached or freestanding
    • Traditional, modern or rustic styling
    • A rendering to review
  2. Construction

Built on site in cedar and finished in the stain you choose.

    • Cedar posts and beams
    • Rafters and top slats
    • Footings or anchoring to a deck
    • Stain
  3. Features

What makes it usable into the evening and from the neighbour’s side.

    • Lighting
    • Fans
    • Privacy screens
    • Railings
  4. Renovation and upkeep

For a pergola that needs attention more than replacement.

    • Repairs
    • Re-staining
    • Waterproofing

Good to know

Planning a pergola:
what shapes the job.

A pergola is a simple structure, which is why its proportions and its footings get most of the attention.

Proportion first

A pergola reads as a room without walls. Its height, the thickness of its posts and how far the rafters overhang decide whether it looks like part of the house or something placed beside it.

The direction of the top slats is chosen against the sun. Run across the afternoon light, they cast more shade at the hour you are most likely to be sitting there.

What it stands on

Wind matters more than weight. An open frame catches gusts, so the posts are tied to footings below the frost line, or to deck framing built to take them, not simply set on the surface.

Permits and setbacks

The pergola and the pavilion sit on either side of a line most municipalities draw: an open roof is treated more lightly than a solid one. Confirm the proposed structure with your building department before it is built; zoning setbacks apply in any case.
