Interlocking driveways in Holland Landing

On a Holland Landing lot with septic, an interlocking driveway is drawn around the tank. East Gwillimbury tells septic owners not to build a driveway over it or cover the leaching bed with pavers, so we find both before the new edge is set. Near the river, a stream, a wetland or a steep slope, the dig and the new grade may also need the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority’s permission, and we check its mapping before the layout is drawn.

A driveway carries cars, so it gets a deeper base than a walkway, and it is usually laid in herringbone. Along a slope, a low retaining wall can level the ground beside it; East Gwillimbury treats walls of 1 m (39 in) or less in exposed height as exempt from a building permit, and anything taller needs drawings. The finished surface is graded so rain runs off to the street or the lawn.

Repair or replace: sunken and heaved interlock

Before lifting anything we look for what moved the stones. A downspout emptying onto the paving, an edge restraint that has let go, or a trench dug nearby since the paving was laid will each undo a reset if they are left alone. Fix the water and the edge, and a local repair holds. If none of those explains it and the settling is everywhere, that points back to the base.
